That passenger who did that deserves attempted murder charges for every customer on that plane ✈️ and the staff included. He risked all those lives. Life no parole.

As noted in the article, the airplane was only 250m off the ground. So yeah, dangerous and stupid but not the catastrophe it could have been. Also, airplanes have fail safes which prevent opening at altitude.

I heard that this was during landing. He probably had a connecting flight he was about to miss. Totally understandable

Who cares how high it was? If you've ever traveled by air, even when the wheels are on the ground, as long as the plane is moving, it's dangerous to open the door. The plane was landing and is traveling at really high speeds. I'd be freaked out if someone opened my car door while taking an off-ramp coming down from only 70 mph.

Airline is clearly in the wrong here, but the more important point is half hidden in the article.

Keep your seatbelt fastened when on a plane. I’ve never needed the seatbelt in a car or a plane before, but I always use it in both so I don’t end up like the people injured on this flight.

believe it or not most airlines (i do not know what Lufthansa's policy is) have VERY loose rules saying you cant capture via still or video photograph flight crew or operations or some such language on board and they use the "49 U.S. Code 46504 – Interference with flight crew members and attendants” as a way to enforce these policies.

As this flight was still over US air space and operating out of a US airport who knows if they would try to use that excuse. The law is a valid one that is needed for when passengers go crazy onboard a flight but airlines like to use it broadly to force compliance on a wide range of things that should not fall under this.

Based on what happened here I would say this was a broad overreach, but I am also not a lawyer and just viewing this from the outside

I’ve been on a BA flight to London also from Austin where this happened. It was right after drinks were served and was a horrible mess. One of the scariest moments of my life. To feel a plane just drop out of nowhere…. Gives me chills to this day.

Also, these videos are great for emphasizing to people why they should wear their seatbelts on flights. Spoiler alert, seatbelts on planes are not for plane crashes, they’re for turbulence. If your commercial jetliner falls out of the sky, the seatbelt doesn’t matter.

Not sure why they need that hint of doubt with "what the airline called" there. Sure sounds like turbulence. That's what happens when you have vehicles traveling hundreds of miles an hour through the air. When the wind is going all different directions, you do too.

That's a pretty amazing feat to fly *up* out of her seat when the plane *ascended*. That's probably a typo but that wouldn't happened if she buckled her seat belt after that first drop.

When I flew SFO to Munich back in October we had a huge drop in altitude somewhere over Europe. It was terrifying, but not nearly as bad as this

I was in a turbulence (not that brutal) once our little embraer was getting to ready to land and lined up behind 747 (as a pilot told everyone later). That was fucked up, luckily since we were about to land everyone was in their seats with seatbelts on including crew. It was not more than one second of a freefall but long enough to be super scary. What’s even more scary is how hard it catches the air afterwards, I’m excited that airplanes survive forces like that without issues.

There is a reason there are seatbelts, never understood the people who take them off and go to sleep or wander around. As an ex road warrior salesmen who flew twice a week for years I’ve seen my fair share of people getting smashed thinking it was a greyhound bus and they could just hang out like it was their living room and not a plane flying hundreds of miles an hour at 30,000 feet.

Is that even legal? Incidents like this are usually looked over by a government body, aren’t they?

In the us the NTSB would be writing a report on it and I’m sure Germany has similar laws. Air travel is highly regulated after all, and all international carriers have to meet the same standards. Destroying evidence before an investigation is generally a crime.

I was on the top of a Disney ride when it broke.  Due to the location we had to wait like 15 minutes at the top for escorts to come help us get down.

Like 15 of us were just sitting there, and they said “since this is backlot (or backstage? I forget the term they used) no pictures are allowed.”

So it just turned into the 15 of us all taking our phones out and taking as many pictures as we could whenever the staff wasn’t looking.

I bring that up to say that i absolutely wouldn’t delete anything and would make sure to share it after if told not to.

The request, essentially, had to be made for appearance. It was to protect the privacy of the other passengers, not the company. 

I’ve been in several analogous situations with Germans.

Germany has strong privacy laws. If you take a photo of somebody in public without their permission you can get into trouble, especially if somebody is “helpless” (injured for example). The flight attendants were probably approaching it from that direction.
